A fraction is a part of a whole. The bottom number (denominator) is how many equal parts exist; the top (numerator) is how many you have.
To compare fractions with the same denominator, compare numerators. Different denominators? Convert to a common base or picture them as pizza slices — visuals catch mistakes calculators hide.
Equivalent fractions look different but mean the same amount (1/2 = 2/4). Simplifying means dividing numerator and denominator by the same factor until they share no common divisor greater than 1.
